Lifespan guide

How long should a temporary email last?

Shorter isn’t always safer: if your address expires before a verification code or manual review is complete, you may lose access to follow-up steps. Start with the longest wait your task may require, then add a practical buffer.

Use the last message to set the window

Don’t judge the window by how quickly the first verification code arrives. After signup, you may still receive device confirmation, a download link, a manual review result, or a security alert later on. What you really need to cover is the last required step.

About 1 hour

Instant verification codes

Use a short window when the action is ready to complete and usually takes only a few minutes, with no account recovery needed. Confirm that every step is finished before closing the page.

3 hours

Signup and confirmation

Ideal for trials, surveys, one-time downloads, and workflows where a code may need to be resent. New VuSend addresses use this duration by default.

6–24 hours

Messages that arrive later

Use a longer buffer for event confirmations, queue notifications, or reviews completed later the same day. Extend by 3 hours at a time, up to 24 hours from creation.

Several weeks

Switch to forwarding

Customer support, subscriptions, project contacts, and account recovery have no dependable end point. Create a pausable forwarding alias instead of relying on a temporary address indefinitely.

Decision points

From a one-time action to an ongoing relationship

01

Are you waiting for just one message?

If the action is clear and you can retry within a few minutes, 3 hours is usually enough. If not, consider what happens next.

02

Will you need to check it again today?

Manual reviews or delayed notifications can take several hours. Extend the window as needed instead of allowing a long-lived address from the start.

03

Will you need to recover the account?

If you might ever rely on email to reset the password, don’t use an address that will be deleted. Switch to a stable email address or forwarding alias.

Can you receive mail after expiration?

No. Once the countdown reaches zero, the old address, messages, and access credentials enter the cleanup process. New mail sent to the old address will not reopen the original inbox. Even if a similar address appears later, do not treat it as a restored session.

Expiration is not a pause button or a reversible archive. After handling a verification code or confirmation link, move any information you need to keep long term to a suitable location—but never save a one-time verification code itself.

Countdowns for short tasks, forwarding for ongoing contact

Choose the tool based on when the task ends, and never rely on a temporary email for account recovery.
